Manchester United have reached an agreement with Brentford to sign Bryan Mbeumo in a deal potentially worth a touch over £70m, with £65m guaranteed.

United have coughed up the day before the first game of preseason. They've basically given Brentford the price they wanted originally. 65m is a lot. I wonder how the deal is structured.

Again, it depends who you believe. They wanted us to match Cunha, then changed the price. Whether or not £65m is a lot... We'll see I guess. If we look miles better next season in attack then people won't moan too much, if we're shit again then watch the media misquote the price in euros and make him sound like another Antony.

I know Dozey will accuse me of defending INEOS as per, but I just don't see how anyone expected us to get good players on the cheap, especially when we're buying from a position of weakness. I personally don't feel we've been fleeced by Brentford but I also don't see a great leap in strategy and negotiating - the profile is just different so far and has been heavily influenced by Amorim needing results ASAP. Let's see what we're like after next summer's window, if we're chasing shadows after another shite season then we're fucked anyway TBF, with or without a new strategy.

I think £65m is decent money if he can reproduce his form at United.

Reading into it more, that's £65m in four instalments, rather than most of it up front. Brentford blinked first in the end, not us. If that means more cash for this summer, then great.

I genuinely think he fits what we should be all about. Fast, tricky, direct, makes stuff happen. More so than Cunha who scores some great goals but drifts in and out of games.

Struggling to get too excited over either of them though tbf, because we've been burnt so many times. Wouldn't it be nice if they could both hit the ground running? Something different for a change.

If it's 4 instalments over 4 years that's good. Romano said they accepted our terms so it probably is that.

But we've paid a fucking wodge, there's no getting around it. We initially offered 40 odd mil up front, then 50 odd in the second bid, but ended up paying 65m. That's a big increase in relation to our available funds. And then it could rise to 71m. 71m is too much for a player with his stats and experience. He also doesn't fix a problem, he contributes to fixing it. We still need a CF.

But I get it, it's a tough gig changing culture. We're desperate, we still don't have a proper recruitment team, we're still only able to focus on single targets and have no alternatives. It's gonna take time.

Romano also said we're going after a CF now but have to sell to buy. Can Ineos turn that part of the club around as well and get some decent money for these shitblokes. Looks like it's all on Wilcox so it's gonna be hard.

I think we paid more than the 65m because of the 4 installments. But then again, I thought this was common practice anyway. Ratcliffe did say they'll be paying an installment of Sancho's transfer fees to Dortmund - which is his 4th year.

Not always common practice with us. We've paid several transfers wholly up front or 80-90% up front in recent years. Maguire, Casemiro, Antony, Mount, to name a few.

Barcelona advancing on deal to sign Marcus Rashford from Man Utd. Offer via intermediaries loan + buy option. #MUFC have agreed - not done but final stages. Flick approves 27yo England int’l; suits #FCBarcelona on football/financial level @TheAthleticFC

Promising. My only concern is Barca are broke and clubs that do business with them can find themselves awaiting payment - like half of their squad.

Loan with obligation concerns me. How is it different from an outright purchase? Why not structure the deal so that they can pay a small amount now and the rest of the money next season

Is this a stupid loan with obligation like Sancho's?

Edit: it's option to buy, ffs.
