Goal line tech and the offside line video assistance took the decision away from referees and it's almost perfectly executed and it has not made the game worse.

Agree with you on goal line tech but VAR for offsides and handballs is just shit IMO because it's forced them to ridculously overthink the rules. Not in the spirit of the game for a fantastic, well-worked goal to be scored that would otherwise be judged to have been "level", only to be ruled out because the players shoulder was 2mm more advanced than the defenders hair. Not to mention the handball rule which is now different for defenders and attackers and changes every season.

Much preferred the old way. Mistakes don't bother me that much that we needed to open up this pandoras box of shite.

That statistic that the accuracy has improved from 92% to 94.5% or whatever says it all. Loads of fuss, ruining the spectacle and for virtually no benefit.

Sorry chaps but this old, outdated, romantic notion of the traditional values of football, where exciting things happened and you didn't have to wait several minutes before you could celebrate in earnest or get angry at the bastard in the black... it's all dead. We should just get rid of referees altogether and let dozer sit in front of his PC and make all the decisions. Not sure how he'll find the time on top of his head of transfers responsibility but the man is superhuman after all.

Lol. Your post criticises VAR but I've also criticised VAR. There is no excitement in incentivising teams to deliberately waste time.
Stopping the clock automatically and having that decision taken away from the referee is more akin to goal line tech than VAR.
Mocking me won't change the fact that you've so far made some weak arguments supporting ref involvement when it comes to calculating stoppage time.

But you've now argued that "We must take the decision making away from referees wherever possible. " Where do you want to draw the line? I'd argue that every decision, however innocuous, is important and potentially game changing, be it whether it's a goal kick or corner or who takes a throw-in right up to whether and when a player can rejoin the game or a substitute can be made. Surely all of these decisions could be taken away from the referee somehow so is that what you really want... "wherever possible"? Should we have it that he just blows his whistle to start a half and then sits and has a cup of tea whilst waiting to blow up for half time or full time? Might as well take that away from him too, i guess, which just leaves us with him being able to demonstrate his skills at running backwards or dummying the ball.

If the referee is no longer in charge of the match, including timekeeping, and has all his decision-making taken away from him, there's no point in a referee any more. Referees are an intrinsic and traditional part of the game and have been since the 19th century and so has whinging about the ref's decisions. Their duties are enshrined in the laws of the game. They are not expected or directed to always be correct in their decisions - to err is human after all. Instead they are expected to be fair in their application of the rules. As Felwin says, an over-emphasis on "accuracy" has taken away from the game and I don't think an over-emphasis on accuracy of timekeeping will add anything worthwhile.

Some things are just human nature. As long as there have been referees, people have moaned about their decisions and potential bias.

It seems impossible but if there was a sensible way we could eliminate the need of referees altogether without affecting the speed of play then yes, I'd get rid of them completely and perhaps just have them run around and only enforce the decisions that have been made for them. I'd only have this if there was a good way of making the changes, like we did for the goal line technology.
It's against tradition but when the tradition is so shit, it's better to improve it.
From the viewers perspective, the only change they'll notice is an improved game and an improved viewing experience where the teams can't game the refs by playacting or wasting time.
This doesn't mean I support VAR. It's the opposite. VAR just gives us more of ref time and ruins the sport.

If the Prem is gonna save the product from the existential crisis, they need to regain some cred and punish these clubs.
